Conflict Resolution Tip:
Keeping the Peace Among Neighbors

With the summer just around the corner, we all will be spending more time outside enjoying the weather.  That will mean picnics, barbeques, and pick-up basketball games.  These outdoor activities can also lead to disagreements between neighbors.  One way to help lessen the tension is to use listening skills.

1. Make a conscious, deliberate effort to hear what your neighbor is saying.
2. Relax.  Appearing tense can further escalate conflict.
3. Maintain eye contact with the speaker.  This lets the speaker know that you are listening to what they are saying.
3. Paraphrase.  Put what the other person said into your own words.
4. Ask open-ended questions to clarify or obtain more information.

Some situations may require help from an outside person.  Mediation can be a viable way to seek a resolution so neighbors can move beyond their differences and live together peacefully.

Cleveland Mediation Center has a long history of helping community members live together more peacefully and in resolving community conflict.  CMC had its beginings helping youth resolve conflicts in their neighborhoods.  Since that time, we have helped landlords and tenants, neighbors and whole communities resolve their differences.
