About the Film
What if the social norms of our world were turned upside down — the “acceptable” ideas about gender and sexuality completely reversed? This is the premise of K. Rocco Shields’ film, LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED? It takes place in a small town high school, where girls play football and boys do arts and crafts; homosexuals make up the majority, while heterosexuals are persecuted. The hometown heroine is star quarterback, Jude, who’s dating social butterfly, Kelly. When Jude falls for a boy named Ryan, the two struggle to keep it a secret. Kelly later discovers their affair and, in a fit of anger, spreads the news to the entire school. What ensues is a barrage of bullying that takes a violent turn. Simultaneously, Shields tells the story of an even younger girl named Emily, whose crush on a boy has brought intense ridicule from her vile classmates. The physical and emotional toll it takes on her leads the film to a brutally dark twist. Brilliantly flipping the script makes Shields’ message incredibly effective. By challenging our perceptions of what is normal, the absurdity of intolerance becomes even clearer. Based on the short film which screened at the 36th CIFF.
