Success Mentors Program Review
The school year is almost over and we are getting ready for the Success Mentors Year End Celebration at H. Barbara Booker!
The Success Mentors program is a voluntary program led by Maria Silva (H. Barbara Booker’s Wraparound Coordinator) and myself, designed to target students who were chronically absent* last year, in an effort to reduce their number of absences this school year. The program uses positive reinforcement and individualized encouragement through the development of a more personal relationship between the student and their mentor. The mentor checked in daily with their student, looked into the days that they missed school, and created intentional opportunities/incentives for them to interact together. These activities and incentives gave students something tangible to look forward to. As a result, the students felt more positive feelings about coming to school, knowing that someone is looking out for them.
As of March 31st, 2016 the students in this program have 94.84% attendance – a huge improvement over last year! The end of year celebration, when the students will be receiving attendance medallions for their participation this year, will take place on May 19th.
*chronically absent: student who has missed 11 or more days of school throughout the year.
